Oh, My Hero Bloghop: Briar Bass from The Bullfrog Guardian Series

I decided to participate in the Oh, My Hero! Blog Hop to introduce my characters to a wider audience. Initially I was going to use Terry from my upcoming debt novel Rachael Becoming Red but after another delay and a few other issues I decided to use someone else. After some mental wrangling I decided on Briar Bass the MC from my recent ya novel idea. He will be interviewed by me and you will decide how cool, interesting or swoon worthy he is as a hero.

Briar Bass

Sheena-kay: Hello Briar.

Briar: Hi, can I have a glass of water?

Sheena-kay: Sure.

Briar: That hit the spot. Ask away.

Sheena-kay: Who are you Briar Bass?

Briar: I am Briar Bullfrog prince and son of Tribaius Bullfrog. My father is an elite guardian of earth. He's #2 but I think it's only a matter of time before he finds a way to trump the dolphin's and become #1. It would be the first time anyone beat the dolphin from top elite since they got the spot 600 years ago. Also as guardians we have the responsibility of protecting those who inhabit it. Bullfrogs were assigned humans and one of the abilities of top guardians is being able to transform into what they protect. I have taken many forms but my current one of Briar Bass is among the most ordinary. As a teenager I go around doing human teen things and avoid stupid conversations with girls who like to laugh more than they talk. But things really heat up when I overhear plans to overthrow the natural order and exterminate all humans. Naturally I had to step up but it turned out to be a dark and dangerous fight.

Sheena-kay: Do you have any qualms about being a frog?

Briar: No and I'm a bullfrog. You know that we're the only animal that never sleeps right? Oh of course you do.

Sheena-kay: *Grinds teeth*

(Briar smiles sheepishly)

Sheena-kay: Are you afraid of losing?

Briar: Fear isn't an option. Losing means extermination of humans and anyone allied with them. That would include my bretheren who love humans. Right now I find them ok. Kinda delicate sometimes but I like their colourings.

Sheena-kay: Our skin tones.

Briar: But bullfrogs have better skin texture. Take it from me.

(Sheena-kay keeps mum on that one)

Sheena-kay : How old are you?

Briar: In human form or bullfrog years?

Sheena-kay: Right. In your current human form.

Briar: I'm sixteen and in high school.

Sheena-kay: What is your idea for a perfect girlfriend or mate?

Briar: No one's perfect. My mate would be of my kind and accepting of my duties as son of an elite guardian.

Sheena-kay: Ok. What about the new girl June Merr? You had to show her around on her first day.

Briar: Yeah and I got attacked by a seal in ball form. Nothing more impressive than a terrified girl watching a 'giant ball' try to pummel you to death.

Sheena-kay: *Sighs* What do you do for fun?

Briar: As a human I go for long walks, excercise and hang out to keep up appearances. In my original form of a bullfrog I hop lilly pads, hang with my friends at the palace, do a bunch of other stuff and train to be a contender for elite guardian when my father passes.

Sheena-kay: That's fun? I mean interesting.

Briar: Your skills of deception are astounding.

Sheena-kay: *Bristling* How was your first kiss?

Briar: Great, I...

Sheena-kay: First human kiss.

Briar: Right. No. Never had one.

Sheena-kay: All your kisses were as a frog??!!

Briar: Don't knock it! I have kissed mermaids. A little human girl even kissed me for Earth Day.

Sheena-kay: I should've picked Lux.

Briar: If you wanted someone as heroic as Britney Spears ex-husband was the finacier for her career.

Sheena-kay: Hey!

Briar: Face it, Circa's the heroine in that story. The W.I.P. even has her name as the title. Lux isn't even riding her coat tails. He wants to be her friend...maybe more. Typical book stuff.

Sheena-kay: Don't knock my work!

Briar: And your initial pick for this bloghop, Terry, that adult agent guy. He kicked an eleven-year old in the first chapter of your upcoming debut novel. What was going to his swoon factor? Kick ass fighter with no qualms about child abuse?

Sheena-kay: I am going to kill you.

Briar: *goes pale* Really? You're going to cut me out and create a new M.C.?

Sheena-kay: What? No! Not like that.

Briar: Thank goodness. What else do you want to ask?

Sheena-kay: What is it like being betrayed during the fight to save human kind?

Briar: Hard. So many who were sworn to protect the earth now just want to reshape it to their own advantage. I'm glad the bullfrogs are a more loyal bunch. Our job isn't easy but that doesn't mean you take a holiday or try to exterminate an entire species.

Sheena-kay: If you had twenty-four hours to live. What would you do?

Briar: I'd go home and stay with my real family. Eat fly jelly with my father and stepmother, hang with my friends one last time.

Sheena-kay: Kiss more mermaids.

Briar: *blushing* Don't tell my dad I did that. Mermaids are big flirts but picky kissers. He'd worry I was going into a cross species relayionship. That's a hughe 'no no' for bullfrog royalty.

Sheena-kay: One last question. Why do you care about humans so much?

Briar: Humans are fascinating creatures. They have no special abilities for the most part but they do so much. Even thoough they have destroyed chunks of the environment, so many are making valiant efforts to save it. Also they love their young so freely even though it's a choice not an instinct. That's just wild.

Sheena-kay: Well I thank you Briar for taking part in this interview.

Briar: Your welcome and here's one of my vacation photos. I know you humans like doing that sort of thing. *Photo*

Sheena-kay: *Eyes pop out* Oh, that will be an attention grabber. Signing off and remember readers to comment and visit other blogs participating in the blog hop.

Briar: Shout out to my family!

Sheena-kay: Go home!

Thank you all for taking part in this blogfest.

Waiting on Wednesday: This is not a Test

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Summary on Goodreads: It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

This book caught my eye earlier in the year. I think it has an interesting premise and zombies are just so in. Admit it whether you love them or hate them.

Lacrimosa  Summary:

It’s been three thousand years since the fall of Azzaziel and the rebirth of evil; three thousand years since the Sentinal Order, an elite group of warrior angels, returned to Celestium. Their job—rid Earth of the dark creatures, the UnHoly. And with luck, end Azza’s rule.
As if casting out demons isn’t hard enough, five-hundred-year-old Nesy has to masquerade as a teenage girl to do it. Nesy is the best of the Sentinals. She never makes mistakes, never hesitates, never gets emotionally involved. Until she meets Aydan.
He is evil incarnate; a fallen angel that feeds off the souls of others. Everything Nesy is supposed to hate. But she can’t, because he’s also the love of her former life as a human girl—a life that ended too soon, tying her to emotions she was never supposed to feel.
Now Nesy must choose between doing her duty—damning Aydan to the fiery depths of hell—or saving him, and condemning herself. And her choice may cost her, and Celestium, far more than anyone realizes.
How much will she sacrifice for love?

Dies Irae Summary:

Mikayel lives by one rule—obey the orders of the angelic Council at all costs. That is, until he and his friends, Azza and Demi, are sent to Earth. Assigned as Watchers while they await their decision of which angelic order to serve, the three assume the bodies of teenagers and experience life as human.
The sensations are overwhelming as the angels experience a host of human emotions—rage, terror, love—and come ever closer to breaking one of the unbreakable rules—never fall in love.
But being human isn’t the only problem facing the three angels. Unbeknownst to the Council, demonic activity is on the rise, threatening to break a tenuous peace that has existed for a millennia; a peace Azza seems bent on destroying.
Caught in a struggle for power with unseen demonic forces and Azza, and fighting against his rising emotional attachment to Demi, Mikayel must now decide how much he is willing to sacrifice for his new found love—a decision that could reignite an ancient war and will threaten the only thing that matters to the angels, the survival of humanity.

Waiting On Wendnesay: Queendsheena Style

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: Insurgent
Author: Veronica Roth
Release Date: May 1, 2012

From Goodreads: One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian Divergent series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

I read Diverent in December and LOVED it. I can't wait for the sequel Insurgent to see what happens next and how the factions react to this crazy new world thrust upon everyone. Dystopia is here and I'm loving it!

Pre-Order: Barnes and Noble, Amazon

Book Review Thursdays: Hanger 13 by Lindsay McKenna

Hanger 13 by Lindsay McKenna
Genre: Romance, Contemporary
Published: September 12, 2006
Source: Borrowed from local library
Purchase: Barnes and Noble, Amazon US
Summary: The moment she stepped into the echoing silence of Hangar 13, Ellie O'Gentry knew herself to be in the presence of an entity of breathtaking power--a presence so terrible, she doubted that even the mystic gifts bequeathed by her ancestors could lay it to rest.
She knew, too, how difficult it was for a combat-hardened fighter pilot like Major Mac Stanford, a man who placed his faith in refined technology and raw courage, to recognize the limits of "his" powers--and ask for guidance of a Cherokee medicine shaman.
But some things simply could not be denied. Like the evil spirit gathering strength in Hangar 13--and the stunning passion flaring between Ellie and this modern-day warrior... .

Review

I'm someone who's not too crazy about romance novels. Not that I don't like romance but over the years I've long tired of cliched plots and swooning every two seconds. True romance to me takes time or at least some magic in that sudden spark. If I want ridiculous swooning I'll stick to movie spoofs. But something about Hanger 13 caught my attention at my local parish library and after getting into it, I have no regrets. This book doesn't just have romance but teaches readers about Ellie's life and culture and also gives insight into Mac's life as a pilot and straight laced military man. Both are thrust into superatural circumstances beyond their control and as their romance blossoms so does the danger in Hanger 13.

Mac Stanford starts out as a military pilot with a problem hanger. Tools are hitting and injuring people in hanger 13. Worse he has an inspection coming up. When someone suggests he ask for the help of a cherokee medicine woman he's beyond skeptical but does it for the sake of his crew. When he meets Ellie his skepticism is glaring but they both come to know each other and feelings arise. Feelings that are more than physical and like the entity in Hanger 13, impossible to deny. But unlike stereotypical romance novels, both actually take the time to get to know each other. There's no stinted dialogue and limited typical swooning thoughts and descriptions. As Mac delves deeper into Ellie's Cherokee culture he begins to see there's more to the world than science and as Ellie does the same she see's a man with scars but still wiliing to love again. Both have to work together to rid hanger 13 of a bitter entity and both have to fight for their lives as they face the most challenging experience in their lives. If they survive, they'll have a chance to see where life takes them. If not, this entity will become more powerful and maybe even be danerous beyond hanger 13.

This book was thought provoking, mysterious, page turning and romantic. If you love romance novels get it. If you don't still go for it because maybe the things you hate about romance novels won't be there like it turned out for myself. Consider this book as a purchase or rental. I personally recommend it.

Countdown to Release: Rachael Becoming Red

Rachael Becoming Red is my debut novel about Rachael Wood who finds out her family was killed by werewolves and that her own village is hiding secrets. The ebook will be released April 30, 2012 on Smashwords and they will henceforth release it on Barnes & Noble, Amazon and other online retailers dutifully. This novel is book one in the Red Series.

Summary on Goodreads: Rachael Wood was only seven when her family was murdered in a vicious animal attack. Now eleven, she lives with her guardian Amanda and lives a happy life in the forest village of Kare. Then she meets Terry, leader of T.O. (The Organization) and learns her family was murdered by werewolves. But to get justice she's have to leave Kare, so she turns it down. Worse Amanda and Terry clash on meeting and both fight to make Rachael see their side. As this goes on Rachael slowly learns the truth about Kare and that things don't just lurk in the dark. They also bite. What is a girl who's to be betrothed to an elder's grandson to do? Live the life she was born into or go out into an unknown world and fight both paranormal and human foes?

Five Questions For You To Consider.

1. Would you be able to move on if your family was murdered?

2. If someone gave you the chance to avenge them would you? And if you had to leave everything you know, could you?

3. If your guardian said someone who you think is trying to help you is a bad person would you cut them off? Or would you make your own decisions.

4. If your home was in danger, what would you do to save it?

5. Could you make any of these decisions at eleven years old like Rachael has to?

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion: A Different Look On Zombie Life

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

I discovered this book over the weekend while looking up information on Eden by Keary Taylor. All I have to say is that the concept of this novel blew my mind and the premise drew me in completely. Warm Bodies follows a love story between R, a zombie, and Julie, a human girl. R while being a zombie wants more in life and Julie being human can probably provide it. But how can a zombie and human be together, especially when he takes her into his world of the undead? Guess you'll just have to read the book to find out. I plan to. This book seems to have taken both a fun and deed approach to what it's like to be a zombie. That they can be more than the ones we see in movies screaming 'brains!' I like that.

Also I got the chance to read the fisrt two chapters for the kindle on Amazon. After enjoying that snippet I know I'll be buying this book before the month is over. Check it out and decide for yourself.

Offficial Summary: R is a man with an existential crisis—he is a zombie. He shuffles through an America destroyed by war, social collapse, and the mindless hunger of his undead comrades, but he craves something more than blood and brains. He can speak just a few grunted syllables, but his inner life is deep, full of wonder and longing. He has no memories, no identity, and no pulse, but he has dreams.
After experiencing a teenage boy’s memories while consuming his brain, R makes an unexpected choice that begins a tense, awkward, and strangely sweet relationship with the victim’s human girlfriend. Julie is a blast of color in the dreary and gray landscape that surrounds R. His decision to protect her will transform not only R but also his fellow Dead, and perhaps their whole lifeless world. Scary, funny, and surprisingly poignant, Warm Bodies is about being alive, being dead, and the blurry line in between.

Book Trailer

Warm Bodies will also be made into a movie. The cast includes Nicholas Hoult  as R and Teresa Palmer as Julie. For more information click here.

You can purchase Warm Bodies at the following stores:

Amazon US, Barnes & Noble, Amazon UK, The Book Depository.

Thank you for stopping by and tomorrow starts the countdown to the self-published debut of my novel
Rachael Becoming Red, Book One in Red Series. Also Thursdays will now be Book Review Thursdays and this week I'll be reviewing Hanger 13 by Lindsay McKenna. This book took romance novels to a different level for me and I think it might do the same for you when you read my review.

2.

Now, seven facts about myself:

1. I don't have a passport. Shocking, I'm getting one soon though.

3. I was a Sweet Valley book series junkie in High School (from 7-12 grade in Jamaica)

6. I was a fan of shows like Dallas and L.A. Law as a child. Yes, I'm strange.
7. I hope to get a C.P. for another set of eyes for my works in progress.

Now for my thoughts on Hunger Games (Limited Spoilers)

On March 25, 2012 (Sunday) I went to see Hunger Games with my Mom. I planned to go by myself Saturday but my mother practically begged me to change days and go together. She didn't want to go alone and we both ended up enjoying ourselves. It was good to see reactions from someone who never read the book. My mother loved the movie but hated the violent things the children were forced to do for sport. I enjoyed the movie but was turned off mainly by how different some of the stars looked from the mental pictures I got from the book. But they caught the personalities of their roles very well and I eased into it. Some of the scenes with Peeta and Katniss alone were awkward and cut off too abruptly. I'm no director but I know there is an art to changing scenes and doing it too quickly leaves viewers blindsided, annoyed or confused. I felt that a few times and hope the next movie does more to eliminate these issues.

But I loved most how scenes not even in the book were created. A behind the scene look on how the games were run and manipulated was very exciting and eye opening for me. It melded so well I'm sure some movie goers assumed it was in the book. Characters like President Snow shined in scenes created exclusively for the movie. Each person played a role and whether it shined or blipped on the screen. This movie was well done and while not Harry Potter level. It beat the first Twilight movie by leagues.

Rating: 3.5 Stars on Technical Aspects and 4 Stars for the movie over all.

Book Review Thursdays: Labyrinth by Rachel Morgan

Labyrinth by Rachel Morgan
Creepy Hollow Book Two
Genre: YA Paranormal
Published: April 1, 2012
Source: Bought at Smashwords
First heard of: Through Rachel.
Purchase: Amazon US, Amazon UK, Smashwords
Extras: Book Trailer
Summary:

Guardian trainee Violet Fairdale has officially been suspended for bringing a human into the fae realm. No assignments, no training, and goodbye to that position at the top of the class. While this sucks, it at least allows her time to secretly keep visiting Nate, the human boy who caused her suspension in the first place. It’s not the wisest move to continue breaking Guild Law, but no one’s going to find out. And Nate is worth the risk, isn’t he?

To prevent herself from going into assignment withdrawal, Vi throws herself into investigating Nate’s real mother, Angelica, a woman who seems to be mysteriously connected to the world of the fae. Nate’s never given her much thought, but that was before an insane faerie abducted him in order to blackmail Angelica out of hiding. Now Nate wants answers, and Vi’s got the perfect ability to help him.

Review

Violet is back. She has decided to not make Nate forget her and sees him in secret. Suspended she decides to help Nate fiind his biological mother. But things get very complicated. From a disk with a strange griffin on it, to what it means. Vi finds that Nate is more than he seems and their relationship gets more complicated as Vi considers if she can do what her heart finds impossible and her mind thinks is logical. Leave Nate. As they continue the search for Angelica, adventure and peril quickly persues them. Will their search for Nate's mother be successful? Can they live long enough to really try? And what will it be like when Nate and Vi force themselves into Nate's true parentage? The story will draw you in with a surprising twist ending.

I'm still a fan of the Creepy Hollow Series after reading book two. But unfortunately it's not as good as book one. In book one it was one thing after another flowing perfectly and keeping your attention in all the right places. Where Labyrinth falls is in the fact that several spots are lagging and they're points where things happen without proper explanation. Like Nate suddenly disappearing and reappearing in a different place without explanation and both he and Vi getting away with hardly any of the patrons taking notice of them despite it being populated by beings of a less lawful nature. Parts with expectation of villains were disappointing and book one (Guardian) definitely utilized the villains better and made you aching for a reappearance. The biggest villain this one and what ensues left me hoping mostly that she and Vi and Nate didn't meet again. But partly because I felt there could've been a much better and less pathethic female villain/deceptor. While these issues didn't make me stop reading. They did disappoint me in what I had expected after reading book one. However there are great things about this novellette and they're why I'll be reading the next one in May ASAP.

Labyrinth follows the new love life of Nate and Vi. Both have clear feelings for each other and between expressing it and Vi trying to be less 'hands on.' They start the search for Nate's mother and both find out unexpected details. The further they go the more intense and dangerous it gets. When they land somewhere Vi's magic can't get them out of they have to hoof it to find their way out. Along the way they meet all kinds of creatures and individuals. And one individual who sees them could mean the end of everything they worked so hard to protect. What I enjoyed about Labyrinth was watching Nate and Vi's relationship blossom and follow them on their journey to find out about Angelica. Also the tormoil Vi faces about keeping Nate and secret adds some good angst and deep emotions. Getting to the end of Labyrinth meant an end to another page turning work by Rachel Morgan. Despite my criticism I still love this series and wait anxiously for the next book to arrive.

Crazy Random Idea: Bullfrog Guardian Series

Everyone give a hand to Kelley Lynn whose blogpost with 'Snapple Facts' started an idea that has created an insane new novel idea. I had a minor breakdown in comments over a new novel idea to haunt me but now with nothing to write I think it's a great time to introduce it. First here's the snapple fact that inspired it all.

10. The bullfrog is the only animal that never sleeps

Wondering how that leads to the start of a novel series idea? Ask my brain I don't know either but here it is. Let me know what you think.

Title: Briar's Dilemma (Title a work in progress)

Series: Book 1 in The Bullfrog Guardian Series

Story: Ever wondered about the purpose of the bullfrog? It's a frog that hops around, many consider ugly and it never sleeps. Wait...yes a bullfrog is the only animal that never sleeps. And that's why it's the perfect guardian of humans in this book series. Certain your bugging now. Your life in the hands of a bullfrog? But wait, they don't fight as bullfrogs. Bullfrogs are one of five of the earth's elite guardians. Each have an assigned species or area to protect. There are fifty earth guardians in all. However only five can be elite and Bullfrogs got their place because of their skill and a special ability granted to no other animal. The need of no sleep in their original form. They can take only three other forms. 1. The form of the natural habitat (e.g. water, sea plants, etc,) 2. What they are assigned to protect (for bullfrogs that's humans) 3. Is a non-physical form: Sound forming - They can copy any sound they hear for up to an hour after and permanently if they touch the source.

Briar Bullfrog of the MMMM Dynasty MMLLLCCCXX, is prince and son of Tribaius Bullfrog (elite guardian number two) likes to go exploring. One day in his bullfrog form he overhears a plot among the mermaids that dolphins, great white sharks and seals are joing the dark alliance to elimate all humans and take over. Briar heads back to his world and tells his stepmother since his father is away. He decides to go to the human world where he's known as Briar Bass in High School. This is his latest cover and he has to take a girl named June Merr on a tour. While they're touring he's jumped by a ...ball in the hallway. June watches in horror as the 'ball' seems to try and pummel Briar to death. But Briar knows this is a secret form of a seal, one most likely in an quatic park or zoo. He pulls out a pen knife and burst it on the boy's bathroom and makes the door stuck so no one will see the blood. He avoids June's questions and heads to the showers to clean up. Later during a study session he hears some girls talking about the increase of accidents at aquariums including deaths of trainers of both dolphins and killer whales. He knows the countdown to human's complete demise has begun. Worst of all Dolphins were the current #1 Elite Guardian and they had a form changing skill no other had unless they were #1. The ability to form into anything that is considered a threat at the time of transformation. And with a coup going down...that would be almost everyone.

So that's they story so far. Briar is a blonde tall teenager in human form and June is a 5'4 raven haired female who just wants to get through high school and live a regular life. Yeah...let's guess how that hope turns out. Anyway this is it for now. I plan to post a proper sumarry in my blog Idea Factory where some of my 'eventually' to be written novel ideas go. I have no date of start or end for this one. I hate the current title but like the name for the series. After you're done please tell me your thoughts. Like if you like this idea, curious of I'm crazy....you know, those thoughts.

And I leave you all with your guardian.

Waiting on Wednesday: Reconnected

Please Note: The final WOW on this blog as I take my final bow this month. I want to thank all readers of this post and all my blogging. I r...
